A Quick Note (While She's Away) [Dec. 21st, 2010|12:24 am]
SurrealMod
Staring at the moon, I saw something else-- as I learned from Dali-- and pretty Luna came in the guise of Mary. The clouds parted, revealing Orion stroking locks of her hair, which flowed and twisted around with a white veil-- not a bridal veil, but a veil of mystery, behind which she held that metamorphic invisibility. In her awe-inspiring largess, she came towards me, descending as a Man Ray or a Georges Braque, splintering like the damnable sunlight and ever more bright for the slivering changed through the darkness. Whispering in her dark silence, she told me she would visit me tonight. That I am so lucky, that I am so blessed, I can only hope this yule will speed my sputtering life into action. And I am alive now! To see such a thing! On such an appropriate day. Oh that she is gone from sight and in our dreams to rise again-- ah, Luna. A blessed night indeed.

Today, I painted. New paints, new canvas. The expensive type. Well, more expensive than a bag o paper type. Yeah, that's my favorite canvas, I think. I'm not an Edward Estlin tho, so I wouldn't count on the greatest thing in the world. Of course, that's not what painting is about anyways. I do like the use of paper bags, even more than making masks. Tear that fucker open, get some paint and make the world.

But, towards the point. I feel it is some of the best I have done. At least, so far. I am dreading getting to the head, so I have decided to do another layer of the rest before circling around to that challenge. My style, in so much that I at least am able to have a style, is self consciously naive. Also concisely. My more folk art styled version of the classic Sappho at the Rocks is one of my best paintings, if I am to judge myself. It is also cartoonish, but that may well be part of its charm. I claim nothing past this.
I'm a poet after all. My turn towards painting is experimental and hobbyist. (Or hobbyhose. Da da da da. DADA.) I am resting on a recent piece before I dive into the next layer of that creamy semen cake of squirted sonic bliss.

One last non-bit o' nothing:
I also endorse BraintonIQ. Available at your local Co-Op. It tastes fucking amazing, with no sugar, and it's supposed to be pretty good for you. Who knows about the later part, but it's better than soda. And I am a Coca-Cola and Fentiman's Curiosity Cola partisan.
Drink it!

Trapped.
Damned and Trapped.
I could be happy, would dare be, in any peasants shack with lack of heat, listening each night as the fishermen pull in their nets, and storms crack, and the smell of Goddess rises from her nesting place, the sound of waves. Ay! to be a peasant.
And I should be content with the life of intellectual curiosity shut up days with books making grand appearances and stirring controversy at grand galas given by royalty old and new on lavish ground with jeweled gardens all dukes and diadems. Ay! for the upper class.
Trapped.
In the middle, the petty small and shallow middle class, the bourgeoisie-- the damned slaves of either end and their bastard child fake work make work. It is not for me-- it is a closing wall, a small closet in a small mind in the demand for more money. I can not live such.
Yet here am I trapped.

Dali, Lorca, Tzara and all ye gods!
Help me!

Hey everyboy and everygirl
That last thing I posted...

Well, it turns out that won't happen.
See, the BLM gave me a call, and we'd need some permit or something.
Instead of working with us, like they claimed they wanted to do
Bsically they kicked us out becuase they were afraid we'd disrupt the wedding the next day
I don't have concrete proof of this
But I do have a gut feeling and an understanding of American government.
So instead, we're going to try to have a Halloween premiere
In Corvallis, of all places.
I'm working on lining that up right now.
More info on that later.

But feel free to tell people how the BLM, etc
They fucked up yet another gathering intended
To distribute non-attached art into the world.

I (the perpendicular pronoun) swore off politicking
When it was sicking me (who?)
But every once and a while
I turn back to the sophomoric style
So here's my unenthused
Response to the News
That the GREAT BLACK HOPE
Is the SAME OLD BOOSHWAH POPE
(not of course that it's all his fault,
but the bully puplit is supposed to hold some salt
And sway)

Figurehead and all that. Shit, they did it with King George! It started a country, you know.

Same old shit from the same old man

In the sheeps close kicking out the old clan

Looking that way, oh yes we can

Spin you yet another web

Draft your daughter into debt

Sell her on the streets

And the boys? Some toys!

Send them overseas

Get them on their knees

Just expendable receipts

The body bags and all

But can't you see I'm standing tall

Overcame emnity

So you think that I'm no enemy

But I got it rich I got it good

Never gave two shits when I should

Have done but I've become

America's new favorite son

And I never held the loaded gun

That's for those rejects

Left in the projects

Not these same old white boy schemes

That a black boy dreams

Not deferred

But preferred

If you're top of the class

Learn how to hold the fasche

And pretend to rearrange

The model but don't change

A single thing at all

If you did, the empire would fall

And never mind those secret prisons

Those are our right they are a given

And enver mind closing down the bay

Those terrorists have more to say

and never mind Dr. King

Saying fuck the rest but peace in his marching

Well, there's only one solution

And it's revolution

Man, it's going to be fun

Like Carl Sandburg wrote

We have to take it up and I qote,

“the shovel is brother to the gun.”

This week, I spent three days working on my movie. Two days fucking around afterwords. Tomorrow, I will start really editing it, as well as getting stuff together for the next term.
It was hard work. The first day it rained and I was freezing my ass off. The producer had to watch some stupid vain idiot's kid instead of worry about helipng. The second day went smoother, but still frustrating becuase of all the needless stops between shooting scenes. Stops for stupid actors, I mean. The third day better, although all our best shots were taken on the second day.
Oh well, I got what I need so far, and will know what else I need after I edit together a first cut.

Good night.

Now, I love Gertrude Stein, I really do. I mean-- I dig her shit.
However, it occurs to me that such a palce as hell would most likely be a room with only one book-- the Complete Works of Ms. Stein, and the Devil would instruct you to go through and analyze every single riff and the importance of each word. You woldn't be aloud to riffle through and pick out the gold like is appropriate, but would have to read the whole thing cover to cover.

That would be terrible.

I'm Pretty Excited [Mar. 13th, 2009|08:35 am]
SurrealMod
In about two weeks, actually a little less, I will get to work on a project I've wanted to do for some time. Actually, this isn't the project I want to do, this is the project I can do. But I am excited all the same. This, coupled with the fact that a cut up archival mix and match film I created will be shown sometime in April shows me I can do what I want. Not that I ever really thought I wouldn't.

Anyways, what I mean is that I will get to make a short horror film which I can then hopefully use to get to make more films. And sell. Becuase we all need a little money, you know? The film is called Fishhead and is a mythological revenge film. But it takes the guise of a horror film. I guess the kind of George Romero social commentary ethic is an influence. BUt What matters most is that the Fishhead project is moving ahead.

Cante Jondo [Mar. 12th, 2009|01:02 pm]
SurrealMod
Every spring I awaken to find that I love butterflies
And feel a deep gypsy cry within my sides.
I long for gardens, trimmed and proper,
Or the street songs of sad mad prostitutes,
Awaiting the day when they will be beat to death
By some young man who couldn't afford what little they charge.

Here is a poem about that, I suppose.
It's a work in progress, which is why I am putting it here.
I don't have a good title either, so let's assume it's called

DEEP SONG (SEVEN OR NINE)

I. BANISHMENT OF THE WIND
Open your eyes, wind,
And show me to the blossom rose
You broke from my mourning garden.
Drift slowly over the tangle tree
Brought down in bout with your might
Through last night’s storm.

But keep still over the desert
Where I learned to cry
The jack ass corpse putrefied the air.
Do not think to swathe me
In some gentle blowing kiss
For I am dead still there.

Wind! Go on without me
And make your way to the seas,
But leave me here, stuck and rotting,
Coughing for your breeze.

II. PUTREFACTION
I’m sick to death with the dust
That crawls into my sides
And sickens me golden days.

Ants pile high hill mounds
Surrounding me with their work
Frenzy building each crumb
That falls from my beard
Becomes a tenement.

I raise my left hand to smash the ground!
I raise my right to swear an oath!

Touch me with no perfume or sea-sweet smell
Or bursting flowers.
I demand the dirt to choke me,
And be no casket.

I raise my left hand with bloodied sword,
And my left holds the wound.

Leave me all! To dirt and cement,
A stinking ass, in ant-hole tenement.

Watchmen Review [Mar. 8th, 2009|06:43 pm]
SurrealMod
SPOILERS (Slightly)
Let me be perfectly clear about the watchmen movie. It is pretty. Very well filmed, except for gratuitous slow motion and a really terrible soundtrack. It wouldn't even be hard to do a good soundtrack for the Watchmen, there are clues through the comic. However, the music in the movie comes across as trying to make the heroes all rock stars.
Except they aren't supposed to be. And that's the problem with the movie. It is in love with the characters, which means even if the director read the book, he didn't read the book. Night Owl is portrayed more along the lines of Batman, than say, a washed up bisexual who can only really get it up when he's in costume. It all comes off like this: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/485797
And as for the changed ending. It just makes it suck. People claim that there would need to be more time to use the original ending. That's not true. The other claim is people wouldn't buy it. Which is also bullshit. Dr. Manhattan, if actually in character, would not "blow up" cities. He wouldn't fucking care, not until the end. The squid worked better, and here's why: it ties into one of the back stories. Tales of Black Freighter. One of the important aspects of the book, is that Adrian has taken artists and scientists to an island where they work to create the monster. There are clues to this throughout the book, in the background. That would not be hard to do. The squid works, the Dr. Manhattan bullshit doesn't. Comedian's visit to Moloch for example, is only motivated if he sees something horrific and not intuitive. It's plain to see that if Dr. Manhattan has godlike powers the populous should be scared. But a horrific bio-engineered squid monster stuck on an Island? That's the reason the Comedian allowed himself to get killed. Figuring that out is actually horrific, a moment of clear terror. Some big blue explosions is just stupid. I see I lost my point, but let me return to it. Tales of Black Freighter was written by one of the people disappeared to the island. We only get a slight glimpse of this in the movie, but instead of something that makes sense it becomes a bunch of scientists that distill the big blue dudes powers.
So, I think the movie sucks. Sure, it's pretty. There are many scenes that are the same. But it fails where it really counts. The reasons for the new ending don't make up for the fact that it sucks shit. There is also something boring about a direct translation. Perhaps the post-9/11 script would have worked better.
If it had the god damn squid.

edit: + this is a movie set in the alternate 80s. But there was all kinds of stupid talk like that from presidents back then. Some cowboy or something.

I will post a long and semi-literate Watchmen movie review soon.

HOWEVER,
for now you'll have to do with this tiny thing

so spoiler if you don't know this already,

Anyways,
The lack of squid creatures made no sense. The changes that were made to update the story did nothing
And since the rest felt like one was just watching
someone taking every seen out of the book and filming it directly
It would have been nice that
they went with the original ending
Which is more in tune with the tone of the piece
instead of adding some useless bullshit
And changing a character into something they are not supposed to be.

Oh yeah, it looked nice, it looked right
It was an okay movie
Nothing more than I expected
But now I think we'll have weeks of this shit
With people who will still never bother to read the original
Because they saw the movie
Which is even worse in this case
Because how lazy do you have to be
Not to read a comic book.

grrrr....

anyways, to recap
Not horrible,
What I expected,
but one serious error on the part of the script
detracted from my overall enjoyment.

Abandoned Jesus Rap Fragment [Mar. 4th, 2009|11:47 am]
SurrealMod
Not many people know about this fragment, translated from the Hebrew,
That appears to re-tell the Jesus story in rap.
In fact, I only just translated it today.
But, let the scholars decide:

WATER BOY JOHN B:
Let me tell you about my little cuz
The meanest motherfucker that ever was
from hell and back and a microphone cord
He grappled and handled a holy Word

MATTMARK LUKENJOHN:
I could go into lines where he is from
All the way back to the first king bum
All the way back to the first man
Since he's a new one and god damn
That boy's touch is gold
Whisper with a ghost chill leave you cold
It's only his father in his eyes
He's a real king and he's in disguise
I guess oh I better warn you
Three ways he transform you know
There's him his dad and the glow
Which he finally gave
Up the downstroke on his grave
Now I better stop and break
Down from his birth to his wake

DOGMA:
His mother was a holy never none better
Loyal and faithful and old Irish setter
Sitting up with beautiful eyes
When she saw a man come from the skies
Dropping down with glory fiery eyes
And sounding that horn

MATTMARK LUKENJOHN
Sound it that a son is born
Not from her husband at all
But she fells the kick inside
Listens to a sacred crawl
Hopes she can avoid a brawl
And another blackest eye
Oh touched by Gods and yet to cry.
She turns to make report
To her husband, his tempers short
But what can he do?
his son will have a brother new
In all the ways like Holy Writ
Oh well, oh hell,
He'll have to put up with that shit.

M.CEASER:
Suddenly there comes a rule
From the lands leading fool
Everyone returns to their hometown
(well the Males) to get counted up
So Ceaser can get down
So back to Bethlehem they run around
To get taxed for Ceaser's new gold cup.

(And the fragment ended there. Who knows what the thing was anyways. But scholastics, namely me, suggest it is a rap song.)
